Newsletter: Wrapped In My Grandma’s Shawl

Does your body respond and react to what stirs within your soul?

Sometimes when I process emotions – I was tweaking a few tough, tender scenes in my book – I get cold. Freezing. And it’s barely below 80 degrees here in Fort Lauderdale.

I don’t know why that happens. So I had a nudge to grab something that I have never worn.

This was my grandmother’s – actually my husband’s grandmother – who was like a mother to me. (video below). I miss her every day. She lived to be 98, and I am so grateful she was in my life and at such a deep, impactful level.

This is her shawl—I am blessed to have it. I’ve never worn it. I look at it. I touch it. To be honest, it has resided in my closet for several years since she’s been gone.

I’m here at my desk, scribbling, revising, and caffeinating. The luxurious life of a writer – just kidding — I haven’t even brushed my hair today! But I wrapped myself in her pashmina, a hug of nostalgia.

Warmth spread through my heart and to the rest of my being. Physically, viscerally, and palpably. I know it somehow came from my grandma, her presence and love. And I wanted to share that moment with you in this week’s Soul Story

What do you wrap yourself up in? An item from a loved one? Or do you cocoon yourself with words, nature, or something else? Reach out either here or on social media. I’d love to connect and hear about your story.

From my heart to yours,

Dara 💜
